The actor with the tall structure, magnificent persona and the characteristic sonorous voice needs no introduction. Son of the late Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is an icon for both the old and the young in the country. With over 180 movies under his belt and numerous awards, Big B rules the film industry even today.
Initially he was rejected by many directors as they wanted an actor of a fairer complexion but they did use his booming voice. So he started his career as a voice narrator and rose to stardom with the lead role in Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer, portraying the character of Inspector Vijay Khanna. The ‘Angry Young Man’ or as he became known henceforth was seen in numerous movies with almost all the actresses of the industry including the ones of the present age like Rani Mukherjee, Jiah Khan, Tabu, Vidya Balan etc. His career in the television industry is also worth mentioning as he rose to fame with Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of the British show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Thanks to his deep voice, he has been a playback singer and a narrator as well. He gave his voice to Luc Jacquet’s March of the Penguins, the French documentary which went ahead to win the Oscar. Apart from all the awards that he won at home, he has also bagged several International honours like the Knight of the Legion of Honour from the French government and the Actor of the Century at the Alexandria International Film Festival, Egypt with his statue in cities like New York, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Washington D.C, including the one at Madame Tussauds in London.
So you can anticipate how the abode of a man of his stature might be. Well, Amitabh Bachchan has two bungalows in Mumbai namely, Jalsa in the name of Jaya Bachchan, his wife and an established actress herself and Prateeksha. He also has an office building named Janak which is adjoined with Jalsa and houses the personal gym of the Bachchans. The family, including Shanouk, the Piranha Dane dog which used to reside in Prateeksha previously has shifted to Jalsa. However, Pratiksha has been kept intact especially the rooms of Harivansh Rai and Teji Bachchan. Big B pays a daily visit to his old abode to pray in the family temple built by his father. Pratiksha can be considered the original abode of the Bachchan family which included Harivansh Rai, Teji, Ajitabh (Amitabh’s brother), Ramola (Ajitabh’s wife), Shweta (daughter, married with two kids), Abhishek , Naina, Namrata, Nilima, Bhim. Even Abhishek tied the knots with Aishwarya there.
Situated in Juhu, Mumbai, the 10,125 square feet, Jalsa was what director Ramesh Sippy gave Amitabh Bachchan for featuring in the 1982 movie Satte pe Satta. For various tax issues, Jalsa was under the ownership of Ramola, wife of Ajitabh Bachchan, the actor’s brother. Later, the ownership was transferred to Jaya Bachchan by a gift deed. Jalsa, which was officially registered in the name of the Bachchans in the year 2006 is said to have a grand spiral staircase with the alongside wall decorated with pictures of the family itself.
If you want to catch a glimpse of the iconic actor, you can do so by confirming your presence at 7 in the evening on a Sunday outside Jalsa. If you are lucky enough, you could also get a sight of Abhishek and Aishwarya waving at the fans. Be it the wedding of Abhishek and Aishwarya or the birth of Aradhya (Abhishek and Aishwarya’s daughter), Amitabh Bachchan’s houses have always been a topic of discussion in the media but never has the interiors of his house been covered by the same. Putting an end to your wait, Anurag Kashyap has reportedly shot a part of his movie, Bombay Talkies inside the Bachchan bungalow and for the first time the interiors of Pratiksha will be shown on screen.
We must say that the houses of Amitabh Bachchan are no less grand and magnificent as the actor himself. For more information, visit Amitabh Bachchan website with house information.
